Joint Health & Diseases

Every day we use our muscles and joints to carry our voluntary bodily movements. The human body has more than 100 joints. A joint is formed where bones meet. Some joints move like a simple hinge, such as those in the elbows and knees. Other joints move in all directions, such as the shoulder joint or the base of the thumb. Joints in the spine allow only a small amount of movement.
To allow smooth movement, joints are covered with lubricated cartilage. This prevents friction during movement, and the fibrous ligaments surrounding the joint give strength and support.
